Upskilling Parents for
Self-Advocacy

Newham, Redbridge, and Barking

"Even though UK law establishes entitlement to support; families find it stressful, when issues arise relating to provision, due to the lack of appropriate information and the power imbalance between families and authorities".

Aim of the project

Parent/carers will become effective advocates; accessing entitlements with an understanding of ‘how things work;’ whilst ‘picking their battles;’ managing stress and isolation.

Divided into 5 sets of 12 participants; each group will attend 3-4 face to face 2-hour workshops, followed by an Action Planning/Next Steps workshop covering the following topics:

  • Rights of disabled children/young people to support services and welfare benefits

  • Transition from children to adult services including future planning

  • Common disputes and skills for resolution

  • Communicating effectively i.e. assertiveness rather than aggressiveness; negotiation and influencing local provision

  • Effective skills for complaining; hierarchy of complaints from local authority to Secretary of State with template letters

Workshops will start in October 2023

For further information and/or to register contact Shirley Barber with a brief description of the child or young person’s diagnosis, their age and your borough. This is necessary for project planning purposes.
